Kevin Costner “Disappointed” About His Yellowstone Exit Rumors

Kevin Costner, who played the lead character in Yellowstone, recently opened up about his disappointment with the exit rumors from the series. In a conversation with People, he said, “I loved the show. I liked the people on the show. I liked what it was about. I love that world.”

Costner played John Dutton for five seasons in the series from 2018 to 2022 before the rumors regarding his exit made consistent headlines on the internet. Many speculated that he left the show because of Horizon: An American Saga, whose first chapter was released last month at the Cannes Film Festival.

He also talked about his appearance in the series. He said, “When it was first pitched to me by Taylor [Sheridan] it was one season and [like] a long movie, which [is] speaking my language… but ultimately, I think what happened was the studio didn’t want that.”

He continued, “And because he’s such a prolific writer, he said, ‘I can do that. I can make a series that goes on.”

Costner further continued that he “stepped up” the series, but he agreed to do three seasons and said, “I ended up doing it for five.” He went on to say that he had to continue the game for the fifth season, and there was a timeline set for the production.

He said, “There was a moment where that show for me stopped for 14 months,” and continued, “That’s the fact. I could have done a lot of things in that time, but I wasn’t aware that that [hold-up] was going to happen.”

Costner exited the show due to a schedule conflict, but the rumors stated that he was leaving the series because of his ego. He was disappointed that no one came forward to rescue him from the buzzing rumors.

He added, “I was disappointed that nobody on their side… ever stepped up to defend what it was I actually did for them.” he shared that at some moment he thought, “Wow, when is somebody going to say something about what I have done versus what I haven’t done?’”

The actor also discussed the many positive aspects of Sheridan’s Yellowstone. He said that he liked Sheridan’s writing, stating, “He understood the world of modern-day ranching and was able to create all this other type of drama inside it, but in an effective way.”

He also revealed that if he felt the script and scenario were right for him, he would interested in returning and finishing the mythology.
