‘Fire Country’ Spinoff ‘Sheriff Country’ Sets Matt Lopez as Showrunner

‘Fire Country’ Spinoff ‘Sheriff Country’ Sets Matt Lopez as Showrunner

Fire Country’s spinoff series Sheriff Country has a new leader. Matt Lopez will serve as a showrunner for the upcoming CBS drama, and he will also serve as an executive producer. The news comes after the network ordered the spinoff series last month.

The news regarding the upcoming series was announced on May 2 by CBS Entertainment president Amy Reichenbach and it was also revealed that it will begin to air the network’s 2025-26 season.

Reisenback said to reporters, “‘Sheriff Country’ is hot. It’s so hot that we’ve decided to make our first series pickup for 25-26 and ‘Sheriff Country’ will join the schedule next year as our series pick up.”

She also added, “This will give us plenty of time to cast it, to figure out how we want to produce it, give us scheduling time, marketing time.”

There were not many details available for the spinoff series, which will be set in the same place as Fire Country: Edgewater, California. Morena Baccarin, who appeared in the two episodes of Fire Country, will lead the new series. She portrayed Mickey Fox, an Edgewater County Sheriff’s Sergeant, and she has fifteen years of experience in the Sheriff’s job.

A few details are available about the new series’ plot. It will follow Mickey’s journey to solve the crimes and cases happening in the small town. While doing her duties, she also has to face her personal issues, including dealing with her ex-con father and mysterious incidents surrounding her wayward daughter.

CBS Studios will produce the series, and the first episode of Sheriff Country will be written by Fire Country’s co-creators Tony Phelan and Joan Rater from a story by Max Thierot. They also executive produce the series along with Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed for Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

Matt Lopez is not a new face in the entertainment industry. He wrote the screenplay of the films Father of the Bride(2022), Race to Witch Mountain, and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. He also wrote the episodes of the series Promised Land and Gone.

Fire Country was created by Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, and Tony Phelan. The series first premiered in October 2022 and had its second season in February 2024. A month after its season 2 release, it was renewed for a third season. Currently, no release date has been announced for season 3. All episodes of the two seasons are available to stream on Paramount+.
