The show follows three main characters: Lucy MacLean, Maximus, and The Goul. It takes place two centuries after the nuclear attack against Los Angeles in 2077, which ended modern civilization.

After the nuclear attack, many of the survivors took refuge in Vault, a fallout bunker. Lucy is living in one of the bunkers, Vault 33, with her father, and he is taken by Vault 32 visitors led by Lee Moldaver. Lucy decides to go out of the Vault to search for her father.
