Early Life

Fetterman was born on August 15, 1969, to Karl and Susan Fetterman in West Reading, Pennsylvania. His family moved to York, and his father became a partner in an insurance firm. He played four years of football in college. In 1991, he graduated from Albright College with a bachelor’s in finance. He also got an MBA from the University of Connecticut in 1993. After that, he worked for Chubb as a risk management underwriter in Pittsburgh.

His best friend’s death impacted his life and career when he was studying at UConn. After that incident, he joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and was paired with an eight-year-old boy whose father died from AIDS and his mother was suffering from the disease.

In 1995, he joined AmeriCorps and was sent to teach GED students in Pittsburgh. 1999, he received a Master of Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School.

Professional Life

Fetterman became the mayor of Braddock in 2005 and was reelected twice until 2019. He also directed a GED program and founded a non-profit organization, Braddock Redux, which focused on acquiring and saving properties in Braddock.

His father helped him financially because, as mayor, he only received $150 per month. After his first election, he set up a website for Braddock to locate the town’s destroyed buildings. To improve the lifestyle of the poor community, he worked to develop abandoned buildings by initiating youth and art programs.

He worked extensively for the town, including converting vacant land into parks and gardens, creating a two-acre organic urban farm, and building the first public basketball court. As a mayor, he tried to attract media coverage to bring investment and new business to the city.

In 2019, he became the lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania by replacing Mike Stack. In May 2022, Fetterman won against Conor Lamb in the Democratic Senate candidacy with 59 percent of the votes and became senator of Pennsylvania in January 2023.

Personal Life

Fetterman has been married to Gisele Barreto Fetterman, a Brazilian-American activist, since 2008. The couple has three children, and they chose not to live in the State House but in a converted car dealership. 

He has struggled with depression throughout his life. In 2017, he was hospitalized after suffering a stroke due to a clot caused by atrial fibrillation. He also suffered from cardiomyopathy and was diagnosed with hearing loss.

Fetterman is famous for his casual style of dressing. He is mainly spotted wearing a sweatshirt and shorts. He wore a suit only when presiding over the Pennsylvania Senate.
