Early Life
Jordan was born to Shirley and John Jordan on February 17, 1964, in Troy, Ohio. He grew up in Champaign County, Ohio. He attended Graham High School and graduated in 1982. He started practicing wrestling in high school and won the state championship for four years.
Then, he continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he won the title of NCAA Division I wrestling champion two times. He won the category of 134 pounds weight class in 1985 and 1986; in the former, he defeated John Smith.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1986. He also earned a master’s degree in education from Ohio State University and, in 2001, a juris doctor from Capital University Law School.
Professional Life
Between 1987 and 1995, Jordan was an assistant coach of Ohio State University’s wrestling program. While working at the university, he was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in November 1994. He represented the 85th Ohio House district for three terms.
In 2000, he became Ohio state senator, defeating the independent candidate Jack Keffenberger with 88% of the vote. He seated Kaffenberger again with 79% of the votes in 2004.
In 2006, Jordan entered the race for the Republican primary for the 4th district seat after Mike Oxley announced that he would not seek re-election. He won the seat by deafening Democratic nominee Rick Siferd, and since then, he has taken office in Ohio’s 4th congressional district and is currently serving his ninth term.
During the 112th Congress, he chaired the Republican Study Committee from January 2011 to January 2013. He became the speaker of the United States House of Representatives in the 113th and 114th Congresses by receiving a vote and two votes, respectively.
Between January 2019 and June 2020, Jordan became the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee. He was honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an “Outstanding American” in 2014.
Personal Life
Jordan married Polly Jordan in 1985. Her brothers first introduced them, with whom he had a wrestling competition. They started dating when Jordan was 13 and Polly was 14. The couple had four children.
