Early Life
Escobar was born to Abel de Jesus Dari Escobar Echeverri and Hilda de Los Dolores Gaviria Berrio in Rionegro, Antioquia Department on December 1, 1949. His father was a farmer, and his mother was a teacher. His family was of Spanish origin and belonged to the Paisa ethnic subgroup.
Escobar was born as his parents’ parents’ even children and grew up in poverty in Medellín’s Medellín’sg city. He left high school before turning 17 but decided not to give up his studies. Escobar forged a high school diploma and went to college to become a criminal lawyer, politician, and president. However, due to a shortage of money, he left his education.
Criminal Career
Escobar began his criminal career by stealing tombstones with his gang and reselling them after sandblasting their inscriptions. Later, he started to be involved in violent crimes such as kidnaping people for money.
Escobar was involved in organized crime in the mid-1970s when the cocaine trade started to spread in Colombia. His quick rise in illegal drug dealings caught the attention of the Colombian Security Service. He was arrested in 1976 but managed to be released in prison after bribing the judges. His drug organization, Medellín Cartel, started to control the Colombian government after he gave financial support to the political candidates who were elected.
After the demand for cocaine increased in the U.S., Escober widened his drug trade through shipments, distribution networks, and routes in various parts of the country, including California, South Florida, and Puerto Rico. The bullets were hit in his torso and feet, and one bullet was hit on his head, which led to his death.
