Mann was born on September 8, 1960, at the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond. Her father, Frank Mann Jr., was a marketing executive; her mother is unknown.
Her parents were divorced when she was three after her mother became pregnant with an extramarital affair. After her parents got separated, she was kidnapped by her mother to Europe. But her father brought her back after one year with the help of a private detective.
Mann recalled her reunion with her father, saying that her father seemed “like a stranger” when they reunited. The kidnapping led her to post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. After that, she met her mother when she was 14, and she forgave her mother a decade later after the incident.
Mann spent her childhood in Bon Air, Virginia, and pursued her education at Midlothian High School in Chesterfield County. Her father and stepmother sent her to a psychiatrist because of her nonverbal and withdrawn character.
When she was 12, Mann learned to play guitar after bedtime, suffering from glandular fever. In her teenage years, she enjoyed the music of David Bowie and Iggy Pop and was inspired by punk and new wave music. 1978 Mann joined Berklee College of Music in Boston to pursue bass guitar. As a child, she wanted to learn the bass, but her family never agreed, stating that it was unladylike.
Mann dropped out of college after 18 months and joined the Boston punk band Young Snakes, but she was not happy while working there as they did not allow her to write love songs or melodic music.
Professional Career
Mann and Michael Hausman started a new band, Til Tuesday, in the 1980s. In 1985, they released their debut album, Voices Carry, after signing with Epic Records. The single “Voices Carry” was included on the Billboard Hot 100 at number eight and won the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist.
They released their second album, Welcome Home, in 1986 and their third and final album, Everything’s Different Now, under Til Tuesday in 1988. 1993, Mann released her first solo debut, Whatever, on the independent label Imago, and her second album, I’m with Stupid, on Geffen in 1995.
Mann’s song “Save Me” from the film Magnolia earned her nominations for a Grammy and an Academy Award. Her third album, Bachelor No. 2, also became a commercial success. Mann’s other albums include Lost in Space (2002), The Forgotten Arm (2005), One More Drifter in the Snow (2006), and Queens of the Summer Hotel (2021).
