Early Life

Norton was born on July 19, 1968, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His mother worked as a librarian, and his father was a former US marine and army reservist. He later shifted his job to the US postal service as a driver. Norton spent his childhood with his sister, Tracy, in North Brunswick, New Jersey.

He went on to attend North Brunswick High School but dropped out during his senior year. He faced a troubled childhood, and at the age of 13, he started to drink alcohol heavily. He recalled that he felt insecure, ugly, and weak, and the alcohol consumption made him feel comfortable.

When he was 16, he attempted to commit suicide by cutting himself by a razor blade. His parents were alarmed by his changes and sent him to a rehab facility; due to that, he missed his high school graduation.

He spent one month in rehab, and during that time, he continued to sneak in alcohol, but later changed his mind and completed the course at 18. Norton drank alcohol last time on New Year’s Eve 1986, and since then, he has been sober.

After that, he earned his GED and resumed his education at Middlesex County College to pursue a Juris Doctor degree to become a lawyer, but dropped it after one month. When he was 18, he worked in a copper company and was fired at 23.

Professional Career

Norton wished to become a stand-up comedian at 12 and performed for the first time in 1990 at an open mic night at 21. After his debut, he worked for five years for his stand-up travel. In 1997, he appeared in The Louie Show, which comedian Andrew Dice Clay noticed, and he invited Norton to become his touring opener, where he worked for Andrew for three years.

In 2001, he was hired as a full-time third mic on Opie & Anthony. In 2003, he assembled his first comedy album, Yellow Discipline and Trinkets, followed by I Own Made from Gorilla Hands in 2005. He hosted HBO’s four-part show titled Down and Dirty with Jim Norton. In 2016, he became the host of Jim Norton & Sam Roberts.

Norton appeared in The Jim Norton Show in 2014, his first four-episode talk show. He appeared in several films, including Spider-Man (2002), Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), and From Nowhere (2016).
