Early Life
Lagasse was born to Emeril John Lagasse Jr. and Hilda Medeiros on October 15, 1959, in Fall River, Massachusetts. His father was from Quebec, and his mother was from Portugal. When he was a teenager, he worked in a Portuguese bakery, where he discovered his talent for cooking.
After discovering his cooking skills, Lagasse joined the culinary arts program at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School. He also showed his percussionist talent, earning him a scholarship to the New England Conservatory of Music. But Legasse dreamed of becoming a chef, so he attended Johnson & Wales University.
Professional Career
After graduating from Johnson & Wales University in 1978, Lagasse started his career as an executive chef at the Dufney’s Hyannis Resort. In 1982, he became the executive chef of Commander’s Palace in New Orleans, replacing Paul Prudhomme, and he worked there for seven and a half years. He got a Chef of the Year nomination in 1983.
Lagasse opened his restaurant, Emeril’s, in New Orleans in 1990. That year, Esquire magazine named it “Restaurant of the Year.” Since 1999, it has received the Wine Spectator Grand Award. During his career, he opened many restaurants, most of which are located in New Orleans, including his corporate office, Emeril’s Homebase.
Lagasse’s first television show was Great Chefs, in which he appeared in ten episodes. In 1993, he was featured as one of the sixteen chefs in the Julia Child series Cooking with Masters Chefs. Between 1993 and 1995, he became the host of How to Boil Water on the Food Network.
Before hosting his show, Essence of Emeril, he appeared in several programs on Food Network. In 1997, he started hosting another program, Emeril Live, which won a Cable Ace Award for Best International Show. Legasse is famous for his light and joyous hosting style and catchphrases, including “Bam!”
He became the host of a daily series, Emeril Green, which aired on Discovery Channel’s Green Planet network. The show mainly used organic, locally grown, and seasonal produce for cooking. In 2010, he hosted Ion Television’s weekly program The Emeril Lagasse Show, and in 2011, Hallmark Channel’s Emeril’s Table.
Lagasse’s Emeril’s Florida on Cooking Channel ran for five seasons between 2013 and 2017. In 2022, he hosted The Roku Channel’s cooking series, Emeril Cooks.
In addition to his cooking career, Lagasse showed his talent in acting. He guest starred in the animated show Space Ghost Coast to Coast. He appeared on the NBC sitcom Emeril, playing the fictionalized version of himself. In 2006, he acted as himself in the film Last Holiday. Lagasse then appeared on the HBO drama series Treme in 2012.
Personal Life
Lagasse first married Elizabeth Kief in 1978. They first met while he worked at the Venus Milo Restaurant to raise money for his school. They share two children. After divorcing Elizabeth, he married Tari Hohn, a fashion designer, in 1989, and they ended their marriage in 1996.
In 2000, he married Alden Lovelace, a real estate broker, for the third time. They have two children and currently live in Destin, Florida.
