Rivera was born to Lillian Friedman and Cruz Rivera on July 4, 1943, at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. His mother was a restaurant worker, and his father was a taxi driver. Rivera was raised as a Jewish child. He spent his childhood in Brooklyn and West Babylon and pursued his studies at West Babylon High School.
After that, he attended the State University of New York Maritime College between 1961 and 1963, where he was a member of the rowing team. There, he transferred to the University of Arizona and earned a B.S. in business administration.
In 1966, he enrolled at Brooklyn Law School and interned with the New York County District Attorney. He received a J.D. in 1969.
Professional Career
After law school, he became a frequent attorney for a Puerto Rican Activist group, Young Lords, and eventually started his private practice. His work caught the attention of WABC-TV news director Al Primo, and he offered Rivera a job as a reporter.
In 1970, Rivera became the reporter for WABC-TV’s Eyewitness News. He caught attention after he won a Peabody Award for his reporting on the neglect and abuse of patients with intellectual disabilities at Willowbrook State School and Letchworth Village.
After that, Rivera started appearing in ABC programs 20/20 and Nightline. For the next few years, he continued to work with ABC in several shows, including Good Night America and The Mystery of Al Capone’s Vault.
