As NCIS returns for its highly anticipated 22nd season, the long-running crime drama is wasting no time in delivering a premiere episode packed with unexpected twists and turns. Centered around the enigmatic Special Agent Jessica Knight, the season opener has set the stage for a thrilling season that promises to delve deeper into the personal lives of the core team.
Knight, formerly of Alden Parker’s D.C. team and now stationed at REACT training in Camp Pendleton, appeared to be holding a clergyman hostage in the premiere’s seemingly alarming scenario. But as the episode unfolded, it became clear that the bound-and-gagged “innocent” was in fact a drug magnate connected to Special Agent Nick Torres’ current undercover investigation.
“This was such a fun episode to shoot,” NCIS star Katrina Law, who plays Knight, tells TVLine. “We had some wonderful guest stars, and getting to play off of [Jackie Tohn, who portrayed the attorney Cecilia Ross], going back and forth, she was fantastic.”
The twist-filled episode not only showcased Knight’s sharp investigative skills but also shed light on her personal journey since leaving the NCIS team in D.C. As Law explains, the moment Knight laid eyes on her former boss, Parker, it became clear that her new role at REACT was not quite the fresh start she had envisioned.
“As soon as she sees Parker’s face, it just kind of clicks for her,” says Law. “I thought I needed something new; I thought I needed to get away from everyone and just start over fresh, but ultimately, what I want and what I need is to go home—and home is in D.C. at this moment.”
The absence of their long-distance reunion in the season opener left viewers wondering about Knight’s relationship with NCIS medical examiner Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen). However, Law promises that “as soon as Episode 2 rolls around” next Monday, “it is Knight back at her desk, full speed.”
And while the episode may have left the fate of Knight and Palmer’s relationship in limbo, Law teases that a “tough conversation” is on the horizon. “In Episode 4, they find themselves alone and unable to leave, prompting them to consider having a difficult conversation.”
With the stage set for a season filled with personal revelations and relationship drama, NCIS fans are surely in for a thrilling ride. The premiere has already shown that the show’s writers are not afraid to introduce unexpected twists and keep viewers captivated.
“This was such a fun episode to shoot,” Law says, a sentiment that is sure to resonate with the show’s loyal fanbase as they tune in week after week to uncover the latest secrets and surprises within the NCIS team. In the premiere, this 22nd season looks to be one of the most captivating.
