Raiders Fire Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy Amid Dismal Season

In a surprising move, the Las Vegas Raiders have parted ways with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, just nine games into his tenure with the team. According to a report from NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the Raiders made the decision to fire Getsy on Sunday evening, following their 41-24 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Raiders’ offense has struggled mightily this season, ranking 29th in the NFL in total yards. Under Getsy’s leadership, the team has managed just a 2-7 record, with inconsistent quarterback play and the midseason trade of star wide receiver Davante Adams only compounding their issues.

Lack Of Offensive Production

“Today wasn’t a good day in the office,” head coach Antonio Pierce said after the loss to the Bengals. “We’ve got the bye week to reset. You look at everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything.”

The Raiders’ offensive woes were on full display against Cincinnati. They managed just 217 total yards, averaging a mere 3.7 yards per play. The team has been plagued by injuries and roster turnover, using three different quarterbacks—Garden Minshew, Desmond Ridder, and Aidan O’Connell—throughout the season.

Getsy was hired in the offseason after serving as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears over the past two years. His previous experience also includes a stint as the quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, where he helped Aaron Rodgers win back-to-back MVP awards.

Seeking A Fresh Start On Offense

Despite the early promise of Getsy’s gameplans, the Raiders’ offense has failed to find any consistency or rhythm this year. The team has scored on their opening drive in four of the last five games, but those starts have not translated into sustained success.

“We’ve got the bye week to reset. You look at everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything,” Pierce said, hinting at the possibility of more changes to come.

One immediate change the Raiders will make is the promotion of passing game coordinator Scott Turner to serve as the interim offensive coordinator. Turner, a former UNLV quarterback and the son of longtime NFL coach Norv Turner, has previous experience as an offensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders from 2020-2022.

Fifth Offensive Coordinator In Five Seasons

The Raiders’ decision to part ways with Getsy marks the fifth time they have changed offensive coordinators and play-callers in the five seasons since the team moved from Oakland to Las Vegas. This constant turnover and instability on the offensive side of the ball has undoubtedly contributed to the team’s struggles.

As the Raiders head into their bye week, they will have an opportunity to reevaluate their offensive approach and determine the long-term direction of the unit. The hiring of Turner as the interim coordinator suggests that the team is hoping to provide a fresh perspective and spark for the remainder of the season.

Looking Ahead

The Raiders’ next challenge will come on Sunday, November 17th, when they travel to face the Miami Dolphins. With eight games left to play, the team will be hoping that the change at offensive coordinator can help them turn their season around and salvage a playoff berth.

For now, the focus is on finding a sustainable solution to the Raiders’ offensive woes. The decision to part ways with Getsy is a clear indication that the team’s leadership is not satisfied with the current state of the offense and is willing to make tough decisions to try and get the team back on track.
