I can share some exciting updates about the hit drama series Yellowstone. Christina Voros, the director of four episodes in the upcoming second half of Season 5, has revealed that John Dutton’s presence will still be “integral” to the story, even though lead actor Kevin Costner has confirmed he will not be appearing.
In an interview with our sister site, The Hollywood Reporter, Voros said, “His presence is integral. Any further information could potentially jeopardize the meticulous work that goes into redacting the scripts to keep plot twists secret. But I believe the question people are asking is, “Is he, or isn’t he?” Given his role as the patriarch and his essential role in the story, people may be wondering, “Is he still central?” John Dutton is still central.“
This is intriguing news, as it suggests the Dutton family patriarch may still loom large over the events of Season 5B, even if Costner himself is absent. Voros was careful not to outright confirm Costner’s absence, simply stating, “I don’t know if we were without him. I don’t know!”
When asked about the ending that series co-creator Taylor Sheridan crafted for John, Voros said, “It made me feel really lucky to get to direct it. Taylor always knows where something will end, and I enjoy watching him find the way. All I can say is that I felt immense gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the telling of this chapter in the story.
Even though the character himself doesn’t appear on screen, it’s clear that John Dutton’s presence will remain deeply felt. Fans will no doubt be speculating endlessly about how the show will handle Costner’s exit and what Dutton’s lingering influence will mean for the rest of the Yellowstone saga. On November 10, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, the Paramount Network will premiere the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone. The six-episode run will bring the full season count to 14 episodes, wrapping up the Dutton family’s story.
Those who want to catch up or watch the new episodes live have several options. Philo is a fantastic choice, offering a 1-week free trial and then just $28 per month for 70+ channels, including Paramount Network. FuboTV also has a 7-day free trial, though their regular price is $59.99 per month. And Sling TV is the most budget-friendly live TV option at $20 for the first month, though you’ll need to add the $6 Entertainment Extra pack to get Paramount Network.
For on-demand viewing, episodes will be available across these services as well as through digital retailers like Apple TV+ and Prime Video. And fans can catch up on previous seasons through FuboTV, which has all episodes from Seasons 1–5 available.
While the Yellowstone saga may be coming to an end, the Dutton family’s story is far from over. You can stream prequels like “1883” and “1923” on Paramount+, and a new spinoff named “The Madison” is currently in development. Therefore, fans of Yellowstone will have numerous opportunities to immerse themselves in Sheridan’s epic portrayal of the modern American West, even after the main show concludes.
