Acclaimed actor Richard Gere is preparing to relocate across the Atlantic after spending over two decades in the United States. The 75-year-old Hollywood star has sold his luxurious Connecticut estate for a cool $10.75 million, solidifying his plans to relocate to Spain with his wife, Alejandra Silva, and their two young children.
Gere originally purchased the New Canaan property back in 2022 for $10.8 million from renowned musician Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell, who had called it home for 17 years. The sprawling 31.8-acre estate featured a stately 1938 main house with 6 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms, as well as a separate 3-bedroom guest cottage. Outdoor amenities included lush gardens, a tranquil pond, and a sparkling swimming pool.
Despite the actor’s short tenure, he has now parted ways with the grand Connecticut refuge, selling it in an off-market deal for a slight loss. Mystery surrounds the buyer’s identity, as a limited liability company completes the transaction.
So what’s prompting Gere’s sudden departure from the United States? As he revealed to Vanity Fair España earlier this year, the decision to relocate to Spain is all about giving his wife Alejandra the opportunity to be closer to her family and cultural roots.
“For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends, and her culture,” Gere explained. “She was very generous in giving me six years to live in my world, so it is only fair that I give her at least another six years to live in hers.”
The 41-year-old Silva, who hails from the coastal city of A Coruña in northwestern Spain, has indeed spent the majority of her married life thus far adjusting to Gere’s American lifestyle. Now, the couple is eager to embark on this “great adventure” of establishing a new life across the Atlantic, bringing along their two young sons, 5-year-old Alexander and 4-year-old James.
“I love Spain, and I think your lifestyle is fabulous,” Gere gushed to Vanity Fair. “Also your ability to live transmits joy and happiness. It is a beautiful place; the food is extraordinary, and the people exude sensitivity and generosity, as well as a strong will to laugh and enjoy.”
While the “American Gigolo” star will be bidding farewell to his Connecticut country home, he plans to maintain a foothold in the United States by keeping a property “in the countryside near New York.” However, the 75-year-old made it clear that he has no desire to reestablish roots in Hollywood, stating, “When I hear the word Hollywood, the first thing I think about is that it is something very foreign to me.”
With his impending move to Spain, Gere, a veteran actor married to Silva since 2018, embarks on a new chapter. The couple, who met by chance in Positano, Italy, back in 2014, have shared a deep connection from the very beginning.
Silva once described their instant bond as “our karma attracted the moment we saw each other.” “I’m not ignoring our age difference and what it means to be with a Hollywood star, but when there’s such a strong karmic energy, the problems disappear.”
As Gere prepares to embark on this “great adventure” alongside his beloved wife and children, fans can’t help but wonder what the future holds for the renowned actor. One thing is certain: with Spain’s vibrant culture and Gere’s zest for life, this transition is sure to be an exciting new journey for the Gere-Silva family.
