Fans of Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and their on-screen collaboration are in for an incredible experience. In a recent interview, Reynolds revealed that he is currently working on a brand new film that will see him reunite with his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Jackman, as well as frequent collaborator director Shawn Levy.
“I’m spending the year writing,” Reynolds shared during an upcoming episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast. “I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman], and Shawn [Levy]. To do that is not Marvel.”
While the actor kept the plot details tightly under wraps, his enthusiasm hinted at something fresh and unexpected that the trio will tackle together over the next 12 months. It’s unclear whether the project already has studio backing, but given the blockbuster success of Deadpool & Wolverine, this upcoming film will undoubtedly be one of Hollywood’s most highly anticipated releases.
This marks the third collaboration between Reynolds and Levy, following their work on the hit action comedy Free Guy and the time-bending sci-fi adventure The Adam Project. The duo’s shared track record for creating box office gold has fostered a strong creative chemistry, with Levy expertly bringing out Reynolds’ signature comedic energy and memorable performances.
“The numbers alone speak volumes about their success,” noted one industry insider. Indeed, Deadpool & Wolverine has become a box office juggernaut, amassing an astounding $636 million domestically and securing its place as the 12th highest-grossing film in history. It now sits just behind Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and ahead of Warner Bros.’s summer sensation Barbie while also surpassing the 2019 thriller Joker to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
Within Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, Deadpool and Wolverine hold the seventh position, having recently surpassed Iron Man 3 on a global scale. Small wonder that the studio is actively campaigning for the film to receive major award recognition, pushing for Golden Globes nods in the comedy categories as well as the newly introduced cinematic and box office achievement awards.
Oscars attention may also be on the cards, as Deadpool & Wolverine seeks technical nominations in areas like production design, sound, and visual effects. The film could even outperform the original Deadpool (2016), which earned Golden Globe nominations for best motion picture (musical or comedy) and best actor for Reynolds, along with notable mentions from industry guilds.
Reynolds, fresh off his second consecutive Primetime Emmy win for the popular documentary Welcome to Wrexham, continues to demonstrate his versatility, balancing commercial successes with critical acclaim. Meanwhile, Jackman received his first Oscar nomination and first Golden Globe win for his musical turn as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, and Levy garnered four Emmy nods for his work on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things.
With Reynolds’ writing process now underway and Levy and Jackman on board, this untitled project is already shaping up to be one of the most eagerly anticipated films on the horizon. Fans can look forward to seeing what creative magic the trio will conjure up, especially after the record-breaking triumph of Deadpool & Wolverine.
“I hope we get to do this till we’re 90,” Reynolds recently captioned an Instagram post celebrating Jackman’s 56th birthday. If this new endeavor is any indication, it seems the duo’s enduring partnership is far from over.
