Denzel Washington is heading for Wakanda! The acclaimed two-time Oscar winner revealed in a recent interview that he will be starring in the next installment of the Black Panther franchise. Speaking with Australia’s Today Show, the 69-year-old acting legend shared the surprising news, stating that director Ryan Coogler is “writing a part” for him in Black Panther 3.
“At this point in my career, I’m only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make—probably not that many,” Washington told the interviewer. “I want to do things that I haven’t done.”
The veteran actor then proceeded to rattle off his upcoming projects, which include reprising his famous role of Othello on Broadway as well as a film version of the Shakespeare tragedy. He also mentioned plans to star as the infamous cannibal Hannibal Lecter and collaborate once more with director Steve McQueen.
But the biggest bombshell was undoubtedly Washington’s revelation about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther,” he announced, flashing a sly grin and a peace sign. “After that, I’m going to film Othello. After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
Marvel has not yet officially confirmed plans for a third Black Panther film, but Coogler’s involvement is certainly exciting news for fans of the franchise. The director helmed both the original 2018 Black Panther movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, as well as last year’s sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Washington’s casting is sure to add even more star power to the already impressive ensemble. The acting titan, known for his roles in films like Training Day, The Equalizer, and Fences, has never before appeared in a Marvel project.
In the interview, the legendary performer explained his selective approach to choosing projects these days. “I’m only interested in working with the best,” he said. “I want to do things I haven’t done.”
Clearly, the opportunity to collaborate with Coogler and be a part of the celebrated Black Panther saga was too enticing for Washington to pass up, even as he contemplates retirement.
The actor revealed that after his stint in Black Panther 3, he plans to tackle the iconic roles of Othello and King Lear before calling it a career. “After that, I’m going to retire,” he declared.
Fans of Washington will undoubtedly be saddened by his departure from the spotlight, yet they can find comfort in the fact that he’s ending his career on a positive note. His upcoming slate of films, which also includes the Gladiator sequel he’s currently promoting, promises to showcase the full breadth of his remarkable talents.
As for his role in Black Panther 3, details remain scarce. But given Coogler’s track record of crafting rich, complex characters, it’s sure to be a compelling and memorable performance. Moviegoers will have to wait patiently to see Denzel Washington don the colors of Wakanda. But when he does, it will undoubtedly be an unforgettable cinematic event.
