Denzel Washington Reveals Deleted Gay Kiss Scene in “Gladiator II”

As the highly anticipated sequel to the 2000 blockbuster “Gladiator” hits theaters, one of its lead actors is making waves with a surprising revelation. Denzel Washington, who portrays Macrinus in “Gladiator II,” revealed that the final edit of the film ultimately omitted a same-sex kiss scene featuring his character.

In a recent interview with Gayety, the acclaimed actor opened up about the deleted scene, stating, “I actually kissed a man in the film, but they took it out; they cut it. I think they got chicken.” Washington further elaborated, “I kissed a guy full on the lips, and I guess they weren’t ready for that yet. I killed him about five minutes later. It’s ‘Gladiator.’ It’s the kiss of death.”

The talented Paul Mescal portrays Lucius, the nephew of the original film’s protagonist, Maximus, in the sequel to “Gladiator”. Forced into a brutal life as a gladiator, Lucius sets out to reclaim the Roman Empire that rightfully belongs to him. Denzel Washington’s character, Macrinus, is a former slave who has amassed a substantial fortune and seeks to capture and enslave other gladiators.

In a separate interview with the Today Show Australia, Denzel Washington revealed that he will be taking on a significant role in the upcoming “Black Panther 3” and hinted at his potential retirement from acting. The acclaimed actor stated, “I don’t know how many more films I am going to make. Probably not that many. But I want to do things that I haven’t done before.”

Washington also announced his plans to reprise Othello, which he played at 22, and act as Hannibal. Additionally, he mentioned discussions with director Steve McQueen about another film project and a role being written for him in the next installment of the “Black Panther” franchise by Ryan Coogler.

Gladiator II: A Thrilling Sequel

Directed by the legendary Ridley Scott, “Gladiator II” has been receiving high praise from critics and audiences alike. The film continues the story from the original, set 16 years after the demise of Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe in the first installment.

The Roman Empire remains a ruthless and bloodthirsty regime, now under the command of Emperor Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Emperor Caracalla (Fred Hechinger). Under the name Hanno, Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Maximus, has been preparing for battle against the invading Roman army under the leadership of General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal).

Following the war’s death of his wife, Arishat (Yuval Gonen), Macrinus (Denzel Washington) captures and sells him into slavery. Lucius makes a deal with Macrinus, promising to fight for him in exchange for the head of General Acacius, whom he holds responsible for his wife’s murder.

Denzel Washington Steals The Show

While Paul Mescal delivers a powerful performance as Lucius, and Pedro Pascal shines as the charismatic General Acacius, it is Denzel Washington who truly steals the show in “Gladiator II.” Critics have widely praised the acclaimed actor’s portrayal of the cunning and vicious Macrinus.

Critics have hailed Ridley Scott’s epic sequel as a visual spectacle, showcasing his signature flair for crafting grand, action-packed sequences. The film’s breathtaking cinematography and captivating fight scenes have gripped audiences.

Overall, “Gladiator II” is a must-see for fans of the original film and those who love grand, historical epics. With its talented cast, captivating storyline, and Ridley Scott’s masterful direction, the sequel is poised to become one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
