Early Life
Carolla was born to Jim Carolla and Kris McCall in Los Angeles on May 27, 1964. He spent his childhood in the San Fernando Valley, and his parents divorced when he was young. He completed his education at Colfax Elementary School, Walter Reed Junior High, and North Hollywood High School.
Carolla played seven years of Pop Warner football as a child. Later, he stated that his involvement in sports helped him avoid his chaotic home life. When he was 18, he started living independently and attended Los Angeles Valley College. However, he dropped out of his studies after being placed on academic probation.
During that time, he worked several jobs, including carpenter, carpet cleaner, traffic school instructor, and boxing instructor. He studied improvisational comedy with the Groundings troupe and joined the ACME Comedy Theatre troupe.
Professional Career
Carolla offered his boxing training services to Jimmy Kimmel for a boxing exhibition on KROQ-FM’s morning program, Kevin and Bean. Kimmel helped Carolla get a recurring role in Kevin and Ben as Mr. Birchum. In 1995, he was offered a job as a co-host on the evening radio call-in show Loveline. Drew Pinsky and metal DJ Riki Ratchman were his co-hosts, and he received the offer after Drew Pinsky liked his style on Kevin and Bean.
The program was a call-in show; listeners mostly asked questions about sex and relationships. Carolla made the show enjoyable by discussing various topics in funny ways. He stayed on the show until November 2005.
