Early Life
Guarnaschelli was born to Maria Guarnaschelli and John Guarnaschelli on June 20, 1969, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was her parents’ only child. Her mother was a cookbook editor and publisher. When she was a few days old, her family moved to New York City. Guarnaschelli developed her culinary experience after watching her test recipes for her cookbooks.
In 1991, Guarnaschelli graduated from Horace Mann School. Then, she enrolled at Bernard College and earned a degree in art history.

Professional Career
In her early career, Guarnaschelli worked for one year at An American Place, where she worked under Chef Larry Forgione. She then continued her career at various New York, Los Angeles, and France restaurants.
Guarnaschelli began her international culinary journey at the French chef Guy Savoy’s restaurant La Butte Chaillot in Paris. She worked there for four years and was promoted to sous chef. After that, she joined Daniel Boulud’s eponymous restaurant and later Joachim Splichal’s Patina.
In 2003, she became the executive chef at Butter Midtown, where she created a menu inspired by American and green-market cuisine. She also worked as an executive chef at The Darby restaurant.
Guarnaschelli made her television debut in 2007, appearing as a competitor in the cooking show Iron Chef America. The following year, she became the host of The Cooking Loft. In 2009, she appeared in an episode of Ted Allen’s Food Detectives. The same year, Guarnaschelli hosted Alex’s Day Off, which started to premiere in October 2009 and ran for three seasons.
In 2009, Guarnaschelli became part of the reality series Food Network Star on Food Network. Since 2009, she appeared as a judge on the Chopped cooking competition. Then, she announced her engagement to chef Michael Castellon; however, they ended their engagement in February 2022.
