Early Life

Hemmer was born to William Ronald Hemmer and Georganne Mary on November 14, 1964, in Cincinnati, Ohio. His father was a retired executive at a mattress manufacturing company, and his mother was a former teacher. He has four siblings. 

Hammer went on to attend Our Lady of Victory Catholic parochial school. In 1983, he completed his graduation from Elder High School in Cincinnati. While in his senior year, he and his friend began a radio program, which played music before starting the class for around fifteen minutes. These acts developed his interest in broadcasting.

Hammer attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in broadcast journalism. He studied at the Miami University Dolibois European Center in Luxembourg during his college years.

Professional Career

Hemmer started his professional career in sports production at WLWT-TV and discovered his passion for television. In his senior year at Miami University, he joined as a sports producer at WLWT-TV. Then, WCPO-TV appointed him as a sports reporter and anchor.

When he was 26, he took a one-year break from his job and traveled worldwide, visiting several countries, including China, India, Nepal, New Zealand, Egypt, and Hong Kong. He stated that the experience helped him get a job at CNN in Atlanta.

He sent tapes and photos of his journey to The Cincinnati Post and CBS’s local affiliate. The pieces were collectively titled “Bill’s Excellent Adventure.” The program received several awards, including two regional Emmys.

Hammer joined CNN in 1995 and hosted numerous programs, including American Morning, CNN Morning News, CNN Tonight, CNN Early Edition, and CNN Live Today. During the 2000 election, he became one of the first national reporters in Tallahassee and remained there for 37 days. He gained much attention for his non-stop reporting and received the nickname “The Chad Lad.”

Hemmer played a pivotal role in the coverage of the Timothy McVeigh execution in May 2001. During his time on the network, he reported numerous news stories, including the World Trade Center aftermath of the attack for a month and the live report of the mining accident from Somerset, Pennsylvania.

In August 2005, Fox News appointed Hemmer to cover Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita in Louisiana. He then became the co-anchor of America’s Newsroom and covered the political party conventions during the 2008, 2012, and 2016 elections.

He also served as the lead reporter and anchor for the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting and the Boston Marathon bombing. In 2020, he became the host of Bill Hemmer Reports. The following year, he returned to America’s Newsroom as a co-anchor with Dana Perino.

From 2005 to 2013, Hemmer dated model Dara Tomanovich. He hosted the George Knittle Memorial Bayley Place Golf Classic yearly to honor his grandfather, George Francis Knittle, who passed away in 2003 at 1the age of 00.
