Early Life
Crystal was born to Jack and Helen Crystal on March 14, 1948, in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. His father operated the Commodore Music Store, which Crystal’s grandfather founded, and his mother was a homemaker. His father was also a producer and executive for the jazz record label Commodore Records.
When Crystal was a toddler, his family moved to 549 East Park Avenue on Long Island. He was J wish and attended Temple Emanu-El. In 1963, Crystal’s father lost his business and died a year later after having a heart attack.
1965, he graduated from Long Beach High School and attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended the university on a baseball scholarship, but during his first year, the program was suspended, and he never played baseball at the university. He left the college and stayed in New York to become close to his future wife.
Crystal theH.B. joined HB Studio to study acting. He resumed his studies at Nassau Community College and later transferred to New York University, where he studied film and television directing. In 1970, he graduated from NYU with a BFA from the School of Fine Arts.
Professional Career
In his early career, he was part of a comedy trio with his friends and played colleges and coffee houses. He also worked as a substitute teacher. He later performed solo at The Improv and Catch a Rising Star. In 1975, he appeared on an episode of Saturday Night Live and several game shows, including All-Star Secrets and The $20,000 Pyramid.
His first notable character was in ABC’s Soap as Jodie Dallas, which ran between 1977 and 1981. In 1982, he became the host of The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour on NBC. Crystal debuted in the film Rabbit Test (1978). In the following years, he acted as notable characters in several films, including The Princess Bride (1987) and When Harry Met Sally… (1989). For his performance in When Harry Met Sally… he got a nomination for a Golden Globe.
In the 1990s, he wrote and directed two films, Mr. Saturday Night and Forget Paris. In the early 2000s, he appeared in several movies, including 61*, America’s Sweethearts, Analyze That, and Parental Guidance. He also voiced the character of Mike Wazowski in the films Monsters, Inc., Cars, and Monsters University.
Personal Life
Crystal married Janice Goldfinger in 1970. They have two daughters, Jennifer, an actress, and Lindsay, a producer. They have recently lived in the Pacific Palisades, California.
