Early Life
Mackie was born to Mildred Agnes Mackie and Charles Robert Mackie on March 24, 1939, in Monterey Park, California. He has an older sister; his father worked at Bank of America. His parents divorced when he was a child, and his maternal grandparents raised him in Alhambra.
Towards the end of high school, he moved with his father to Rosemead and attended Rosemead High School. After that, he attended Pasadena City College and later studied at Chouinard Art Institute for one year. However, he didn’t earn a degree from either institute.
At Chouinard, he had an opportunity to study with Eva Roberts, the head of the fashion department. He left the institute before completing his studies after he got a sketching job at Paramount Studios for Frank Thompson.
Professional Career
Mackie worked under designer Ray Aghayan between 1960 and 1963, where he worked as a novice designer and assistant. In his early career, he worked as a sketch artist for Jean Louis, a famous fashion designer, and French haute couturier who designed a dress for the actress Marlene Dietrich during her career as a cabaret singer.
When he started his career, Mackie’s first assignment was to create an original dress sketch for Marilyn Monroe to wore President John F. Kennedy’s birthday party in 1962. In 1966, Mitzi Gaynor hired Mackie to design costumes for her stage show at the Riviera.
She was his first star client, with whom he designed an entire show, and continued to design for her next 50 years. He won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design for his work on two of Mitzi’s TV specials.
In 1969, he was hired to design costumes in the television special GIT: On Broadway for Diana Ross, The Temptation, and The Supremes. His work in the musical drama Lady Sinsgs The Blue in 1972 earned him an Emmy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. Mackie continued collaborating with Daina Ross for her several stage shows, including the 2010 More Today Than Yesterday: The Greatest Hits Tour.
Mackie designed the costumes for the burlesque shows Hallelujah Hollywood from 1974 to 1980 and Jubilee! from 1981 to 2016. Many of his designs for these productions are available in UNLV Libraries Digital Collection’s “Showgirls” collection.
He designed costumes for the singer Cher on her concert Cher at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. He also created designs for her 2017 “Classic Cher ” concert in Washington D.C. and Las Vegas.
Mackie also created costumes for the singer Whitney Houston. His designs have won him nine Emmy Awards and three Academy Award nominations.
Personal Life
Mackie married Lulu Porter, an actress, in March 1960, and they share a son, born in October 1959. The couple got separated in 1963. Their son Robert Gordon Mackie Jr., known as Robin, was a makeup artist and died in 1993 due to AIDS-related illness.
After separating from Porter, Mavkie started dating costume designer Ray Aghayan. They stayed together until Aghayan died in 2011.
