Early Life

Gelman was born to Ira and Candace on October 6, 1976, in Highland Park, Illinois, United States. His father was a photo salesman, and not many details about his mother are available. He has a younger sister, and they were raised as Jewish.

He attended Highland Park High School in Illinois. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina School of Arts, where he received classical training in theater.

Professional Career

After graduating from college, Gelman moved to New York City and started his career as a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. During that time, his work was funded by a famous New York Lottery commercial, and he performed a one-person show called 1000 Cats.

In 2004 he made his film debut in Blackballed: The Booby Dukes Story, where he acted as a member of the Mayhem crew. After that, he played minor roles in Gingerbread and Stuck It in Detroit. 

In 2007, he became part of the comedy film Watching the Detectives. In the following years, he appeared in several movies, including The Other Guys and 30 Minutes or Less. In 2011, he co-starred with Chris Elliott as Brett Mobley in the live-action series Eagleheart. He became a regular sketch performer on Funny or Die Presents and Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time.

Gelman appeared in a recurring role on HBO’s The Life & Times of Tim and MTV’s The Inbetweeners. He also made guest appearances on various comedy shows, including Curb Your Enthusiasm, Bored to Death, The Office, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Gelman married Janicza Bravo, a film director, producer, and screenwriter, in December 2015. They first met while working on a commercial for New York Lotto. The couple separated in 2018. In April 2023, Gelman announced his engagement to Ari Dayan, a model and actress.
