Harris was born on June 1, 1977, in Plainview, New York. Her mother, Fran Harris, raised her and her sister, Ashley. She grew up Jewish. During her elementary school years in Florida, she won a beauty contest, and for the prize, she got a ten-day trip to New York City. 

During that trip, she received an offer for modeling jobs. However, Danielle turned down the offers because they were far from her home. She started working as a model after her mother transferred back to New York City. After that, she began to work in television commercials.

Harris started her acting career at a young age. In 1985, when she was seven, she played the role of Samantha “Sammi” Garrettson in One Life To Live on ABC. Harris appeared in that show for three years. In 1987, she guest appeared in the series Spenser: For Hire.
