Early Life

Elfman was born to Blossom Elfman and Milton Elfman in Los Angeles on May 29, 1953. He belongs to a Jewish family of Russian descent. His mother was a writer and teacher, and his father worked as a teacher. He has a brother, Richard Elfman, who is an actor, filmmaker, musician and journalist.

Elfman grew up in an affluent, racially mixed community in Baldwin Hills, California. He spent most of his time watching sci-fi, fantasy, and horror films at the local theater, where he noticed the music of composers Franz Waxman and Bernard Herrmann.

During his early school days, Elfman was not interested in music and was rejected by the elementary school orchestra. However, when he changed high school, he joined a music crowd and was introduced to Jazz and Stravinsky’s work. He joined University High School but didn’t complete his studies.

After dropping out of school, Elfman followed his brother Richard to France, where he performed violin with the musical theater group Le Grand Circus. Then, he went on a self-tour through Africa for ten months.

Professional Career

Elfman’s brother Richard asked him to become the musical director of the musical theatre troupe The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. The troupe performed in the streets, theaters, and nightclubs of Los Angeles. In 1976, Richard left the group to pursue his career in filmmaking. He produced a film based on the stage performance of Mystic Knight, and Elfman composed the songs for the film.

The same year, Elfman became the lead singer-songwriter of Mystic Knights. In 1979, the group changed its name to Oingo Boingo. Between 1981 and 1994, the group released eight studio albums, and their highest charting song was “Wierd Science,” which reached number 45 on the US Billboard Hot 100. In 1995, Oingo Boingo retired after a farewell concert on Halloween.

In 1985, Elfan wrote a score for Tim Burton and Paul Reubens’s first feature film, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.  After that, he scored the movies Back to School, Beetlejuice, Scrooged, Wisdom, and Midnight Run.

In 1989, he won a Grammy for Tim Burton’s Batman score. He also scored several other Burton movies, including Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992), Sleepy Hollow (1999), and Alice in Wonderland (2010).

Elfman received an Emmy Award nomination for his scores in Men in Black (1997), Good Will Hunting (2007), and Big Fish (2003). He composed the Men in Black and Fifty Shades film series scores.

Personal Life

Elfman married Geri Eisenmenger, and they have two daughters, Lola and Mali. Mali is an actress and film producer, and she collaborated with  Elfman on her film Do Not Disturb, released in 2011.

In November 2003, Elfman married actress Bridget Fonda. The couple has a son, Oliver.
