Early Life

Gregory was born to Don Gregory and Carolyn Fitzpatrick Gregory in Los Angeles, California, on August 24, 1970. His mother worked as an account manager, and his father was a film and theatrical producer. He attended Birmingham High School in Lake Balboa, Los Angeles. Then, he enrolled at American University in Washington, D.C., and graduated in 1992.

While at the university, Gregory joined the campus television station ATV – American University Television and earned an international studies degree from the School of International Service.

Professional Career

Gregory started his career as a summer reporter at 18, joining KGUN-TV in Tucson, Arizona. He also worked for KCRA-TV, which was affiliated with NBC. NBC assigned him to cover George W. Bush’s press corps during his 2000 presidential election campaign. At that time, Bush threw a party for Gregory’s 30th birthday. Buch nicknamed him “Stretch” and “Dancing Man.”

Gregory joined as NBC’s White House correspondent after the election. For his coverage of the first 100 days of Bush, Gregory was named ‘Best White House Correspondent’ by the Media Research Center. He remained in that position until 2008 before taking the job in the program Meet the Press.
