Early Life
Allen was born on January 16, 1950, in Houston, Texas, the third child of Vivian Allen and Andrew Arthur Allen Sr.. Her father was an orthodontist, and her mother was a Pulitzer Prize-nominated artist.

She graduated from Howard University with a B.A. in classical Greek literature, speech, and theatre. After that, she studied acting at HB Studio in New York City. She became a member of Chi Delta Mu Health Professional Fraternity.
Allen developed an interest in dancing at a young age. When she was twelve, she auditioned at the Houston Ballet Academy but was denied admission. However, another year later, a Russian instructor admitted her after watching her performance in a show. The academy understood her talent and allowed her to stay, and she was trained under Suzelle Poole.
Professional Career
Allen started her career by appearing on Broadway theatre. She debuted on Broadway in 1970 after becoming part of Purlie’s chorus. After that, she appeared in the musicals Raisin, Truckload, and Ain’t Misbehavin’. In 1980, she performed in the Broadway revival of West Side Story as Anita, which earned her critical attention.
Allen made her television debut in 1976 when she appeared on the sitcom Good Times on CBS. She was part of the NBC variety show 3 Girl 3 the following year. Then she acted in the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations. In 1981, she starred in a significant role in the film Ragtime, based on the novel of the same name.
In 1982, Allen played Lydia Grant, the main character, in the six-season television series Fame. The series is an adaptation of the 1980 film of the same name, in which she played a minor role. Allen also became the lead choreographer for the film and television series and won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography.
After Fame, Allen focused her work as a choreographer. She choreographed the Broadway adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. She also released two solo albums: Sweet Charity (1986) and Special Look (1989).
She then became the director of the 1989 musical film Polly and the 1995 crime drama film Out-of-Sync. In 1995, she played a role in NBC’s In the House, which ran for five seasons. Allen co-produced Steven Spielberg’s 1997 film Amistad.
Allen founded the non-profit Debbie Allen Dance Academy in 2001. She has directed episodes of several television shows, including All of Us, Everybody Hates Chris, How to Get Away with Murder, and Jane the Virgin.
Personal Life
Allen married her longtime boyfriend, Win Wilford, in 1975. After eight years, they divorced in 1983. In 1984, she married Norm Nixon, a former NBA player, and they have three children.
