Pinsky was born to Morton Pinsky and Helene Stanton on September 4, 1958, in Pasadena, California. His father was a physician, and his mother was a singer and actress. His family is Jewish, and his father’s parents immigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine.
In 1976, Pinsky graduated from the school and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. In 1984, he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine.
He completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at USC County Hospital and served as a chief resident at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. Later, he started his private practice.
Professional Career
Pinsky’s career in the entertainment industry began as a medical student. In 1984, he started appearing in a segment called Ask a Surgeon on KROQ-FM’s Saturday night show, hosted by Jim “Poorman” Trenton and “Swedish” Egil Aalvik.
Later, his segment was combined with “Loveline,” which he co-hosted with Trenton. In 1995, the program went national, and the following year, its television version was started on MTV, and Pinsky hosted it with Adam Carolla.
Pinsky first appeared on television in 1984 as a contestant on the Wheel of Fortune game show. In 2000, he served as a “health and human relations expert” on the first season of Big Brother. He also hosted several educational TV series, including Strictly Sex with Dr. Drew and Strictly Dr. Drew.
In November 2007, Pinsky started hosting another talk radio show, Dr. Drew Live, where he discussed a wider range of health issues. The following year, he starred in the VH1 reality show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, filmed at Pasadena Recovery Center. The show ran for six seasons and ended in November 2012. He also starred in Celebrity Rehab’s spinoff, Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew, which premiered on VH1 in November 2009.
