Early Life
Holder was born to Miriam and Eric Hampton Holder, Sr., on January 21, 1951, in New York City. His father was born in Barbados and, at the age of 11, moved to the United States. Holder’s father worked as a real estate broker.
Holder spent his childhood in East Elmhurst, Queens, and until age 10, he attended a public school. When he was in the 4th grade, he participated in a program for Black students who were intellectually gifted. He completed his graduation from Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. After that, he joined Columbia University, where he became a member of the basketball and football teams.
In 1973, he earned a B.A.A. degree in American history; in 1976, he earned a J.D.D. degree from Columbia Law School.
Professional Career
After graduating from Columbia Law School, Holder joined the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Justice Department and worked there between 1976 and 1988. While there, he assisted in prosecuting John Jenrette for bribery related to the Abscam sting operation.
In 1988, he was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. In 1993, he was appointed the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia after being nominated by Bill Clinton. Between 1996 and 1997, he also served on the Board of Trustees of George Washington University.
In 1997, he became the Deputy Attorney General, and his primary responsibilities were budget and personal issues. After leaving the position in the Clinton administration in 2001, Holder returned to his private practice and joined the law firm Covington $ Burling in Washington, D.C.C. He represented clients, including Merck, N.F.L., and Chiquita. He also represented the Swiss private bank UBS and Purdue Pharma.
In 2007, he joined Obama’s presidential campaign as a senior legal advisor and was also part of Obama’s vice presidential selection committee. In 2008, Obama nominated Holder as Attorney General of the United States, and the entire Senate confirmed it in 2009. He left the position in 2015 and continued his private practice after rejoining Covington & Burling.
In 2016, the South African-based company M.T.N. Group hired Holder to fight back the $3.9 billion fine the Nigerian government imposed on it. 2017, Uber hired him to investigate a former employee’s sexual harassment and discrimination allegations. The investigation resulted in the firing of more than 20 employees and the resignation of Uber C.E.O. Travis Kalanick.
