Early Life
Carlson was born to Karen Barbara and Lee Roy Carlson on June 21, 1966, in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Her father owned an automobile dealership, which was started by her grandfather in 1919.
Carlson was a violinist who played it on radio and television. She attended the Juilliard School of Music with Dorothy DeLay, a famous violin instructor. She also studied in Mary West of the MacPhail Center For Music in Minneapolis.

In 1992, she was hired by WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she worked as a media commentator for two years. After that, she started working at WOIO/WUAB in Cleveland, Ohio. During that time, she also served as KXAS-TV’s weekend anchor between 1998 and 2000.
In 2000, Carlson became the national correspondent, and in 2002, she was the co-anchor of CBS’s The Early Show. She joined Fox in 2006 and served as the weekend substitute host for Fox & Friends. Later, she became its co-costar with Steve Doocy and Brian Kilmeade for eight years.
