Early Life
Gaffigan was born to Marcia Miriam and Michael Ambrose Gaffigan in Elgin, Illinois, on July 7, 1966. He was the yougest of six children of his parents. His mother was a charity worker and fundraiser, while his father served as the Mercantile Bank of Indiana’s president and CEO for 15 years until he retired in 1991.
Gaffigan’s father was the first person in his family to study at college. So, he encouraged his children to choose a career that assured job security. But Gaffigan announced his wish to become an actor when he was five.

Gaffigan grew up in Chesterton, Indiana, and attended La Lumiere School in La Porte, where he became part of the school’s football team. When he was a teenager, he watched Saturday Night Live. he enrolled at Purdue University for one year and then transferred to Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. There, he earned a degree in finance in 1988.
Professional Career
After graduation, Gaffigan worked as a litigation consultant for a short time. Then, in 1990, he moved to New York, where he worked in advertising during the day and attended acting classes at night. At that time, he was cast in a series of commercials in Blockbuster Video’s “Entertainment Squad.”
Gaffigan fell in love with stand-up comedy after attending a seminar and performing at comedy clubs at night. He continued his career by trying various styles and voices. However, the acceptance of live comedy declined in the 1980s due to the popularity of cable television.
After five years of trying, Gaffigan joined The Late Show with David Letterman in 1999, and his career took a new turn. In 2000, he co-starred alongside Christine Baranski in the sitcom Welcome to New York, which ran for only one season. Then, he acted in the 2001 films Super Troopers and 30 Years to Life. He became a regular cast member in the sitcom My Boys on TBS until its third season.
In January 2005, Gaffigan appeared in a live Comedy Central special. He played a notable character in th 2008 movie The Love Guru, and the following year, he guest-starred in an episode of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords. In 2015, he appeared in the sitcom The Jim Gaffigan with Ashley Williams. The premiered on TV Land and ran for two seasons.
