In 2016, Legend and Chrissy purchased a mansion in Beverly Hills for $14.1 million and sold it for $16.8 million in 2021. They also own two penthouses in New York City, which they bought for $9 million and $8 million.

Early Life

Legend was born to Ronald Lamar Stephens and Phyllis Elaine on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio. He is the eldest of four children of his parents. His father was a drummer and worked as a factory worker at International Harvester, and his mother became part of the church choir, where she sang and directed. 

At first, Legend was homeschooled and started playing piano when he was 4. He performed with the church choir at 7, and his academic talent led him to skip two grades. Legend attended North High School and graduated salutatorian.

Then, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. While there, he served as president and musical director of the Counterparts, a jazz and pop a cappella group.

The American singer Lauryn Hill hired Legend to play piano for her song “Everything Is Everything” after her mutual friend introduced him. In 1999, he completed his bachelor’s degree in English.

Professional Career

After his university graduation, Legend started working as a management consultant at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where he wrote, produced, and recorded his music. In December 2004, Legend released his debut album, Get Lifted, under GOOD Music. It debuted seven on the US Billboard 200, and RIAA certified it gold. The album won the 2006 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.

In the following years, Legend appeared in several musicians’ albums, including Fort Minor, Jay-Z, Stephen Colbert, and Rich Boy. he released his second studio album, Once Again, in October 2008, and its single “Heaven” won Grammy Awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
