Lithgow was born to Arthur Lithgow and Sarah Jane Price on October 19, 1945, in Rochester, New York. His mother was an actress, while his father worked as a theatrical director and producer, overseeing the McCarter Theatre in Princeton. He has a brother and two sisters.

Lithgow spent his childhood time in Yellowstone Springs, Ohio. His family moved frequently from one place to another because of his father’s job. He attended Princeton High School and completed his graduation in 1963. After that, he joined Harvard College and studied history and English literature.
In 1967, he graduated from there with an A.B. magna cum laude. Later, he won a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After completing his studies, he worked as WBAI’s Director of the Arts and Literature Department.
Professional Career
Lithgow began his film career in 1972 by debuting in Dealing: Or the Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick-Lost-Bag Blues. In 1976, he appeared in Obsession, directed by Brian De Palma. He made his Broadway debut in 1973 in the play The Changing Room at the Morosco Theatre. He won the Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Play for that performance. In the following years, he appeared in the Broadway shows My Fat Friend and A Memory of Two Mondays.
In 1979, he starred as Lucas Sergeant in Bob Fosse’s movie All That Jazz. Lithgow received two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in the film The World According to Garp (1982) and Terms of Endearment (1983). In the 80s, he appeared in several films, including The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Mesmerized.
Lithgow won an Emmy Award in 1986 for his appearance in an episode of the anthology series Amazing Stories on NBC.
