Early Life
Milius was born to William Styx Milius and Elizabeth Milius on April 11, 1944, in St. Louis, Missouri. He is the youngest of three children of his parents. His father was a shoe manufacturer and owned the Milius Shoe Company, which his grandfather founded in 1923. When Milius was seven, his father sold the company and retired. Then, the family moved to Bel Air, California.
Milius became interested in surfing at a young age. At 14, he attended the Lowell Whiteman School in Colorado. In the late 1960s, Milius tried to join the Marine Corps and also as a volunteer for Vietnam War service but was rejected due to mild asthma.
Milius then considered becoming an artist or historian but later fell in love with cinema after watching Akira Kurosawa films during a summer vacation in Hawaii in 1962. He enrolled in the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television to study film. His thesis film, Marcello, won the National Student Festival’s beFestival’son award. It also screened various festivals around the country.
Professional Career
Milius joined the story department of American International Pictures as a summer job with his classmate Willard Huyck, who also started working there. Together, they read scripts under producer Larry Gordon. Eventually, they collaborated to rewrite the film The Devil’s Eight screenplay, which was reDevil’sin 1968.
Milius wrote the script for Jeremiah Johnson and sold it to Warner Bros. for $5000 in 1970. Then, George Hamilton hired him to rewrite the script for the biographical film Evel Knievel, which he completed in seven days. He wrote the screenplay for The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean and sold it to the production company First Artists. He also wrote the first draft of Magnum Force, the Dirty Harry sequel.
Milius made his directorial debut in the 1973 film Dillinger, in which he wrote the script. Next, he wrote and directed the historical adventure film The Wind and the Lion, released in 1975. The same year, he founded the production company, The A-Team, with Buzz Feitshans. Under that production company, Milius directed the 1978 film Big Wednesday.
In 1979, Milius co-wrote the script of the film Apocalypse Now and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay with Francis Ford Coppola. In 1982, he directed and co-wrote Conan the Barbarian. The following year, he became the director of the films Red Dawn (1984), Farewell to the King (1989), and Flight of the Intruder (1991).
