Early Life
Stossel was born to Otto Ernst Stossel and Anna Dora Stossel on March 6, 1947, in Chicago Heights, Illinois. His parents were Jewish and emigrated from Germany to the United States before Hitler rose to power. After reaching the U.S., his family joined a Congregationalist church. Stossel spent his childhood time in Chicago’s affluent North Shore.
Stossel attended New Trier High School and then Princeton University, where he earned a B.A. in psychology in 1969.

Professional Career
Stossel began his career as a newsroom gofer at KGW-TV. Later, he switched to being a researcher and then a writer. After a few years in that position, he began his career as an on-air reporter. Then, he was hired by Ed Joyce at WCBS-TV in New York City. He also served as the Stuttering Foundation of America’s spokesman.
In 1981, Stossel was offered a job as a correspondent at ABC News’s 20/20 and a consumer reporter for Good Morning America. There, he presented a segment, “Give Me a Break,” which covered topics such as government regulations, education, pop culture, etc.
In May 2003, he became the co-anchor of 20/20. The following year, Stossel published his first book, Give Me a Break: How I Exposed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media.
Stossel left ABC News in September 2009 and joined Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. There, he appeared every Tuesday on The O’Reilly Factor. In addition to that, he became the host of Fox Business Network’s one-hour weekly program and Fox News Channel’s one-hour special. He also made guest appearances on Fox News programs regularly.
Stossel’s talk show, Stossel, debuted on Fox Business Network in December 2009. The program examined various socially relevant topics, including free market capitalism, individual freedom, civil liberties, and free trade. It concluded in December 2016. Stossel also helped Reason TV produce content.
In 2019, Stossel launched an online channel named Stossel TV, which uploads weekly videos through social media. He published his second book, Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity: Get Out the Shovel – Why Everything You Know is Wrong 2007. His third book, No, They Can’t: Why Government Fails – But Indivituals Succeed, was published in 2012.
Stossel began writing Creators Syndicate’s weekly newspaper column in February 2011. His articles have also been published in online magazines such as Reason, Newsmax, and Townhall. Throughout his career, Stossel won 19 Emmy Awards. In addition to that, he won the Peabody Award and the George Polk Award for Outstanding Local Reporting.
