Early Life

Batiste was born in Metairie, Louisiana, on November 11, 1986, and spent his childhood in Kenner, Louisiana. He is a member of the Batiste family, a musical dynasty from New Orleans that includes Lionel Batiste, Milton Batiste, and Russell Batiste Jr.

When he was eight, Batiste started playing percussion and drums with the Batiste Brothers Band. At 11, following his mother’s suggestion, he switched to piano. He continued to learn classical piano from a local teacher until he turned 18. He continued to develop his piano skills by transcribing video game songs, such as Final Fantasy VII, Street Fighter Alpha, and Sonic the Hedgehog.

Batiste released his debut album, Times in New Orleans, when he was 17. He then attended St. Augustine High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and graduated in 2004.

He then enrolled at the Juilliard School for jazz studies and earned a Bachelor of Music in  2008 and a Master of Music in 2011. He released his second album, Live in New York: At the Rubin Museum of Art, during his time at Juilliard.

Professional Career

Batiste performed his debut at the Concertgebouw in 2007. After that, he conducted workshops, music clinics, and classes in inner-city schools and unprivileged neighborhoods in the Netherlands. Later, he produced and performed his show at Carnegie Hall with six musicians. 

In 2013, Batiste released the album Social Music, which topped the Billboard and iTunes jazz charts for over a month. In 2016, he released a holiday album, Christmas with Jon Batiste. The following year, he released his two singles, “Ohio” with Gary Clark Jr. and Leon Bridges, and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” His cover of “St. James Infirmary Blues” received an Emmy nomination for Best American Roots Performance in 2019.

Batiste released his debut solo album, Hollywood Africans, in 2018, under Verve Records. The lead single was “Don’t Stop.” In 2020, he composed the music for the film Soul with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. They won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for that music.

In 2021, Batiste released his fifth solo studio album, We Are, which won five Grammy Awards out of eight nominations. His seventh studio album, World Music Radio, was released in August 2023 and featured artists including Lil Wayne, Lana Del Rey, and JID.
