Early Life
Groff was born to Julie and Jim Groff on March 16, 1985, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His mother was a physical education teacher, and his father was a harness horse trainer. At an early age, he became interested in theater and acting after falling in love with Julie Andrews’s performance as Mary Poppins. In childhood, he and his brother performed stage entertainment in his father’s barn.
Groff credits Sutton Foster with influencing him as an aspiring actor. He joined the middle school and high school drama departments, where he was inspired to start his theater career.
