Early Life
Kal Penn was born to Asmita Bhatt and Suresh Modi on April 23, 1977, in Montclair, New Jersey. His father was an engineer, and his mother evaluated fragrance for a perfume company. Penn attended Marlboro Middle School in New Jersey, where he played baritone saxophone in a jazz band.
Penn attended Freehold Township High School and enrolled in the International Studies Program. During his junior and senior years, he became involved with The Fine and Performing Art Center’s acting program at Howell High School. At that time, he also actively became part of the school’s theater productions. He then attended UCL and graduated with a double major in film and sociology in 2000.

Penn began his acting career by appearing in the film Express: Aisle to Glory in 1988. The following year, he appeared in an episode of the supernatural series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Between 2000 and 2003, he acted in an episode of several series, including Spin City, ER, NYPD Blue, All About Andersons, and The Lonely Island.
In the early 2000s, Penn appeared in numerous movies, including American Desi (2001), Van Wilder (2002), Cosmopolitan (2003), Love Doesn’t Cost a Thing (2003), and Malibu’s Most Wanted (2003).
In 2004, he starred as Kumar Patel in Danny Leiner’s comedy film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. He also reprised the character in its sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Vay, released in 2008.
In 2007, Penn starred as Ahmed Amar in the Fox’s action drama series 24. In the same year, he played a notable role in the parody film Epic Movie. Penn disclosed his relationship with Josh in his memoir, You Can’t Be Serious, published in 2020. They have been together for many years and have been engaged for five years. They first met while Penn was working in th Obama administration.
