Early Life
Jennings was born on May 23, 1974, in Edmonds, Washington. His father, Kenneth Wayne Jennings Jr., was an attorney, and his mother was an elementary school librarian. He was the oldest of their four children.
Since childhood, he has been obsessed with reading reference books, including atlases, encyclopedias, and The Guinness Book of World Records. When he was seven years old, his family moved to South Korea, and there, he started watching the show Jeopardy! on American Forces Network.
Jennings lived in South Korea and Singapore for 11 years and graduated from Seoul Foreign School. Upon his return to the United States, he attended the University of Washington to resume his studies.
As a member of the Mormon church, he served as a volunteer missionary in Madrid for two years before transferring to Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1996. After graduating from college, he worked as a software engineer for CHG Healthcare Services in Salt Lake City.
Professional Life
Jennings appeared as a contestant in the Jeopardy! In 2004, for its 20th season. Before 2003, the show didn’t let the contestants participate in more than five consecutive wins. In the 20th season, the show changed the rules and allowed the contestants to participate in as many of the games they win.
Jennings won 74 consecutive games on Jeopardy! and earned $4,522,700, which made him the highest-earning contestant in American history. However, in his 75th game, he was defeated by Nancy Zerg.
He signed on to Jeopardy as a consulting producer in September 2020, during its 37th season. After the death of the longtime Jeopardy! Host Alex Trebek, Jennings became a guest host in November 2020. He co-hosted the program with Mayim Bialik in 2021 and continued in the 39th season. He also began to host the Jeopardy! Masters series.
After Bialik from the show Bialik 023, it was announced that Jennings would host Celebrity Jeopardy! for the second season. At the start of the 40th season, he became the permanent sole host of Jeopardy!
