Early Life
Smith was born to Grace and Donald E. Smith on August 2, 1970, in Red Bank, New Jersey. His father was a postal worker, and his mother was a homemaker. He grew up in a Catholic household with his two siblings. His father’s struggle in his job greatly influenced Smith, who vowed never to go to a job that he could not enjoy.
Smith went on to attend Henry Hudson Regional High School. While at that time, he attended The New School in New York City. Then, he started working at a youth center and became friends with Jason Mewes after discovering their interest in comic books.

Professional Career
Smith became interested in filmmaking after watching Richard Linklater’s comedy film Slacker on his 21st birthday. He noticed that Linklater shot the film in his hometown rather than a crowded city, which made an impression on Smith.
He thought of shooting a movie where he lived. Then, he joined the Vancouver Film School, where he met his collaborators Dave Klein and Scott Mosier. He didn’t complete the course because he wanted to save money for his first film.
Smith returned to New Jersey and started doing his old job at a convenience store. He raised $27,575 for his film through his comic book collections and other activities for his film Clerks. He tried to save the money by casting his friends in various roles. The film premiered at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival and won the Filmmaker’s Trophy.
After the screening, Miramax executive Harvey Weinstein met Smith and offered to buy the film. Despite its limited release on fewer than 50 screens, the film became a financial success, earning $3.1 million. In 1995, he released his second film, Mallrats, for which he also wrote. However, it didn’t perform well at the box office.
Smith released his third film, Chasing Amy, in 1997, which earned $12 million at the box office with a budget of $250,000. Next, he created a fantasy comedy, Dogma, debuting at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. In 2001, he released Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, in which he also played Silent Bob.
In 2004, smith’s sixth film, Jersey Girl, starring Ben Affleck, was released. He made a sequel of Clerk titled Clerk II in 2006. In the following years, he directed the films Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), Cop Out (2010), Red State (2011), Tusk (2014), Yoga Hosers (2016), Jay and Silent Bob Rebbot (2019), KillRoy Was Here (2022) and Clerks III (2022).
