Early Life
Williamson was born to Faye Williamson and Wade Williamson on March 14, 1965, in New Bern, North Carolina. He was the younger son of his parents, who worked as a fisherman. Williamson spent his childhood in Aransas Pass, Texas, but his family returned to North Carolina when he was in high school. He received a BFA in Theatre Arts from East Carolina University in Greenville.
Professional Career
After graduating, Williamson moved to New York City to pursue his career in acting. In 1990, he landed a role in the soap opera Another World. He then moved to Los Angeles and played a small part in the series In Living Color and the films Hot Ticket and Dirty Money. During that time, he took screenwriting classes at UCLA and wrote his first script, Killing Mrs. Tingle.
In 1994, Williamson penned a horror movie script titled Scary Movie after being inspired by Donny Rolling’s story in the news magazine Turning Point. Miramax purchased the script for $400,000 for their label Dimension Films, and eventually, Williamson signed on as its director.
The film was later renamed Scream and released in December 2016. It became a commercial success, earning $173 million worldwide. He also wrote the script for the second and fourth installments in the Scream series.
After the success of Scream, Williamson was hired by Paul Stupin to create a series for Columbia TriStar Television. As a result, he created Dawson’s Creek, which premiered in January 1998 on The WB. The series ran for six seasons and ended in May 2003.
Williamson wrote the script for his next film in 1997, titled I Know What You Did Last Summer, based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film earned $125.3 million with a budget of $17 million. The film’s success led to the creation of two sequels, but Williamson didn’t get involved.
In 1999, Williamson directed his first penned script, Teaching Mrs Tingle, initially titled Killing Mrs. Tingle. After that, he created the short-lived series Wasteland and Glory Days. In 2005, he made another film titled Cursed, directed by Wes Craven. The following year, he wrote The CW series Hidden Palms.
Williamson successfully developed The CW series The Vampire Diaries with Julie Plec. The series premiered on the network in September 2009 and became famous worldwide. It ran for eight seasons until March 2017. Between 2011 and 2018, he created the television series The Secret Circle, The Following, Stalker, Time After Time, and Tell Me a Story.
