Professional Career

While at the University of Southern California, Gray wrote songs for her friend, which were scheduled to be recorded by another singer. However, the signer could not appear, leading Gray to record them herself.

Then, she started working as a cashier in Beverly Hills, where she met writer and producer Joe Solo. They collaborated and wrote a collection of songs recorded in Solo’s studio. The demo tapes allowed Gray to show her talent in jazz cafés in Los Angeles. Shortly after, she signed with Atlantic Records but later left the label after the departure of the person who had signed with the label.

In 1998, Gray signed a record deal with Epic Records. She performed the song “Love Won’t Wait “ on Behind the Front, the debut album of the Black Eyes Peas. In 1999, she released her debut album, On How Life Is, with producer Darryl Swann. Its second single, “I Try,” became one of the biggest hits of that year, and it won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2001. It also got Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.

Gray released her second studio album, The Id, in 2002. It peaked at number eleven on the Billboard 200. The album’s single, “Sweet Baby,” featured John Frusciante and Erykah Badu. Shortly after, she worked with Santana on his album Shaman and recorded a duet called “Like the Sun” with Zucchero.

Gray’s third studio album, The Trouble with Being Myself, was released in 2003. Its lead single, “When I See You,” became a hit on the radio throughout the US. The following year, she released The Very Best of Macy Gray, her first greatest hits album.

In 2007, Gray released her fourth studio album, Big, and its track, “What I Gotta Do,” featured the soundtrack of the animated film Shrek the Third (2007). In 2009, she recorded the song “Don’t Forget Me” for Confessions of a Shopaholic’s soundtrack. Gray’s single “Beauty in the World” from the fifth studio album, The Sellout, was featured in the finale episode of ABC’s Ugly Betty.

2011, Gray released her sixth and seventh studio albums, Covered and Talking Book. Her other studio albums include The Way (2014), Stripped (2016), and Ruby (2018).
