Early Life
Wash was born in San Francisco, California, on December 28, 1953. She started her music career at age two in her parents ‘ church in her native city. She attended McKinley Elementary and then San Francisco Polytechnic High School. While in high school, she was part of the school choir and traveled for two weeks throughout Europe for performances. She also appeared in the school choir’s four albums.
After graduating high school, Wash joined a contemporary gospel group called NOW (News of the World), which included Izora Rhodes. In her early years, She worked as a secretary at UC Hospital.
Professional Career
In 1976, Wash gave an audition to singer Sylvester, and he was impressed with her vocal performance. After that, she formed a musical duo with Rhodes called Two Tons O’Fun. They made her debut on Sylvester’s self-titled third album by singing backup vocals of the singles “Down, Down, Down” and “Over and Over.”
The duo released their self-titled debut album, Two Tons of Fun, in January 1980. The following year, they released their second single, Backatcha, and its single, “I Depend On You,” reached number 72 on the Dance chart. Their biggest hit was the single “It’s Raining Men,” which was released in 1982. It topped number one on the Dance Chart and 46 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
After the success of their single, the dupe changed their group name to the Weather Girls. They released their third album, Success, in 1983 and the fourth album, Big Girls Don’t Cry, in 1985. Wash released a solo song, “Breakin’ The Ice,” in 1986 for the soundtrack of the film Gun Ho. The Weather Girls dispersed in 1988, shortly after the release of their self-titled fourth album. After that, Wash started her solo career as a session vocalist.
In 1989, Wash was recruited as a session singer by the Italian house music group Black Box. She demoed six songs for the group, which used Wash’s vocals on its debut album, Dreamland. They also used her vocals in their singles “I Don’t Know Anybody” and “Everybody Everybody,” which became international hits.
However, Black Box never credited Wash with her vocals, which led her to sue Black Box and RCA Records in 1990. Later, the case was settled out of court when the company agreed to pay Wash a financial fee and signed an eight-album recording contract with her.
In 1993, Wash released her self-titled solo album, Martha Wash, which peaked at number 169 on the Billboard 200. Her second solo album, Something Good, was released in January 2013. She released her third album, Love & Conflict, in January 2020.
