Tierney was born to Pat Tierney and Joseph M. Tierney on February 3, 1965, in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the eldest of three children of her parents and grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Tierney went on to attend Mount Alvernia Academy Elementary School. She also studied drama at the Notre Dame Academy in Hingham and appeared at the Boston Globe Drama Festival. She completed her graduation at New York University, majoring in dance, and later switched to drama.
Professional Career
Tierney started her career by appearing in several plays. Then, she moved to Los Angeles in 1987 and landed a role in Disney’s made-for-TV film Student Exchange. The following year, she appeared in the television film Crossing the Mob and in the sitcom The Van Dyke Show, where she acted in 10 episodes. At the start of her career, she played many minor roles in several series, including Family Ties, Booker, Law & Order, and Lifestories: Families in Crisis.
In 1994, Tierney starred in the television film Out of Darkness and the miniseries 704 Hauser. She became popular after playing the lead role of Lisa Miller in the sitcom NewsRadio on NBC, which ran for five seasons between 1995 and 1999.
