Early Life

McG was born on August 9, 1968, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His uncle and grandfather were named Joe, so to avoid confusion, his mother nicknamed him “McG.” He spent his childhood in Newport Beach, California. He attended Corona del Mar High School and formed a band with Mark McGrath because, as a teenager, he dreamed of becoming a lead singer.

However, his dream failed as he failed as a frontman, so he worked behind the curtain as a producer and marketer. He worked for the band until he became 22. After that, he resumed his studies and earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from UC Irvine.

Professional Career

After graduating, McG started a record label, G Recordings, in 1993. He signed his label with the band Sugar Ray, led by Mark McGrath. McG produced the first album of Sugar in 1995. He also became the co-writer of their second album’s songs.

The band signed with Atlantic Records after he helped them to make the music video for the song “Caboose” by borrowing $3,500 from his father. After signing with Atlantic Records, McG began his career as a music video director. His music video credits include Smash Mouth’s “All Star”, Sublime’s “Santeria”, and The Offspring’s “Pretty Fly.”

His success in that field eventually led him to the television commercial business. He directed advertisements for Major League Baseball and Coca-Cola. His commercial for Gap was honored at the 1999 London International Film Festival.

Drew Barrymore approached McG to direct the film adaptation of the television series Charlie’s Angels after being impressed with his music videos. He accepted the project, and the film was released in 2000 and grossed over $250 million worldwide. After that, he founded his production company, Wonderland Sound and Vision, whose first film was the sequel to Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, released in 2003.

McG co-created the series Fastlane, released in 2002, and was canceled after one season due to production costs. He then executive produced the series The O.C, which ran for four seasons. McG also served as the executive producer of the Supernatural series (2005) until 2013. In 2016, he directed the sports film We Are Marshall.

He became the director of Terminator Salvation, the fourth installment of the Terminator series, in 2009. Subsequently, he directed This Means War, which was released in 2012. Then, he directed the horror comedy film The Babysitter (2017) and its sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020).

Personal Life

In late 2010, he dated the actress Bridget Moynahan, whom he first met on an airplane. In 2007, his brother died due to an overdose of cocaine.
