Early Life

Oz was born to Mustafa Öz and Suna Öz on June 11, 1960, in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents emigrated from Konya Province, Turkey. His family moved to the U.S. as his father wanted to join Case Western Reserve University’s general residency program in Cleveland. Oz spent his childhood in Turkey, and to maintain his dual citizenship, he served in the Turkish Army for 60 days.

Oz attended Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Delaware. He earned his undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard University. While at university, he played safety on the football team and became a goalkeeper on the varsity water polo team. In 1986, he earned an MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and an MBA from Penn’s Wharton School.

Professional Career

Oz started his medical career in 1986 with a residency at Presbyterian Hospital. In 1995, he and his colleague Jerry Whitworth founded the Cardiac Complementary Care Center. Oz and Eric Rose received wide media attention the following year after a successful heart transplantation for professional football player Frank Torre.

In 2000, Oz opened the Cardiovascular Institute and the Integrative Medicine Program at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and served as its director. The following year, he became a professor at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Oz contributed to developing numerous heart surgery devices and procedures, including MitraClip and the left ventricular assist device (LVAD). By 2015, he also held several heart-related surgery patents. 2010 Oz co-founded the health and wellness company Sharecare, Inc., with Jeff Arnold.

In addition to his medical career, Oz has appeared on several television shows. In 2003, he made his television debut as the host of Second Opinion with Dr. Oz, which aired on Discover Channel.

His wife, Lisa, produced the show, which ran only five episodes. Through that show, he met Oprah Winfrey, leading him to appear regularly on the Oprah Winfrey Show as a health expert for five seasons.

In 2009, Oz became the host of The Dr. Oz Show, co-produced by Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Productions. On that show, he discussed topics like Type 2 diabetes and promoted resveratrol supplements. During its run, the show won nine Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Informative Talk Show. After over a decade of airing, it ended in January 2022.

Oz appeared in numerous shows, including Good Morning America, Jeopardy, Entertainment Tonight, Today, Fox & Friends, and Extra.

Personal Life

Oz married Lisa Lemole, a radio and television personality, in 1985. They first met in Philadelphia through their fathers. The couple has four children and lives in Cliffside Park, New Jersey. They founded a non-profit organization, HealthCorps, which provides health education and peer monitoring.
