Professional Career

In the late 1990s, when Williams was 20, she met Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland, the Destiny’s Child band members, at an Atlanta hotel lobby. Several months later, she contacted the band through a choreographer who knew the group as they were searching for new singers. Williams immediately joined the group alongside Farrah Franklin, replacing LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett. However, Franklin left the group after five months.

The trio released “Independent Women Part I” in August 2000. It appeared on the soundtrack of Charlie’s Angel in 2000 and remained on the top of the official US singles chart for 11 weeks. The band released their third studio album, Survivor, in May 2001, and it debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.

In April 2002, Williams released her debut solo album, Heart to Yours. It peaked at number 57 on the Billboard 200, and in its first week, 20,000 copies were sold. It also peaked at number two on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart and became the best-selling gospel album of the year. In August,  she started her first tour as a solo artist to promote her album.

In 2003, Williams made her on-stage acting debut in the Broadway musical Aida, where she performed the title role. She became the only Destiny’s Child member who acted on Broadway.

Williams released her second studio album, Do You Know, in January 2004. It reached number 120 on the Billboard 200 chart and debuted at number two and three on the charts’ Top Gospel Albums and Top Christian Albums tally, respectively.

Williams made her television debut in the sitcom Half & Half on UPN in 2006, after the disbandment of Destiny’s Child. In October 2008, she released her third studio album, Unexpected. Its lead single, “We Break the Dawn,” became her most successful single and peaked at number four on the US Hot Dance Club Play.

Williams’s fourth studio album, Journey to Freedom, was released in September 2014 and debuted at number twenty-nine on the US Billboard 200. She has also made guest appearances on the television show Family Time, Raven’s Home, American Soul, and Kingdom Business.

Personal Life

Williams started dating pastor Chad Johnson in 2017 and announced their engagement in  April 2018. However, in 2018, they called off their engagement.
