Early Life
Shannon was born to Peg and James F. Shannon in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 16, 1964. Her family was an Irish-American Catholic. When she was four, her mother, younger sister, and a cousin were killed in a car crash caused by her father due to drunk driving. Shannon and her older sister survived the accident and were raised by her aunt during the period when her father went through a recovery from the injury.
She attended St. Dominic School in Shaker Heights and Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio. She studied drama at New York University and earned her graduation in 19878 at Tisch School of the Arts.
Professional Career
Before starting her acting career, Shannon worked as a hostess at Cravings restaurant and as a food demo girl at the supermarket Gelson. In 1989, she was cast in the horror film The Phantom of the Opera with Robert Englund. Later, she appeared as “the happy helping hand lady” in the television series Twin Peaks.
In 1995, she got her breakthrough after joining Saturday Night Live, and her character gained wide popularity. She appeared as Sam in an episode of Seinfeld in 1997. The following year, she acted as Emly Sanderson in the film A Night at the Roxbury.
In the early 2000s, she appeared in several films, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Osmosis Jones, Serendipity, and My Boss’s Daughter. In 2004, she acted in the series Cracking Up on Fox and made a guest appearance in the film Good Boy! She starred as Aunt Victoire in Sofia Coppola’s historical film Marie Antoinette.
