After that, she continued her studies at Morgan State University and graduated from the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland in 1987.

At the start of her career, Mo’Nique worked as a customer service representative at MCI in Hunt Valley, Maryland. Her comedy career began when her brother dared her to perform at an open mic night at the downtown Baltimore Comedy Factory.
She debuted in the television series The Parkers on UPN, where she portrayed the character of Nicole “Nicki” Parker, and the show ran between 1999 and 2004. She performed her stand-up comedy in many venues, including Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam, Showtime at the Apollo, and Thank God You’re Here.
