Early Life
Swardson was born to Roger Eric Swardson and Pamela Swardson on October 9, 1976, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has two siblings: a sister and a brother. His father was an editor and journalist who wrote for publications such as City Pages and Cincinnati Enquirer. He also founded the former Saint Paul community newspaper, Grand Gazette. When Swardson was a teenager, his parents separated.
Swardon went on to attend St. Paul Central High School. At the age of 16, he began acting and performing improv. While in high school, he was expelled from the school four times for using alcohol and drugs and had to go to rehab. After that, he completed his high school graduation in 1996. Then, he decided to pursue his stand-up comedy despite going to college.

Professional Career
Swardon began his performance in stand-up when he was 18, at the Minneapolis comedy club Acme Comedy Co., where he attended open mic. After the encouragement of the club owner, he performed again and won the award for ‘Funniest Person in the Twin Cities. He performed regularly at Knuckleheads, a comedy club in the Mall of America.
When he was 20, Swardson was selected to perform at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival’s stand-up after getting attention in the comedy circle. He moved to New York City, then Los Angeles, and performed in many nightclubs. He also started appearing in commercials and played minor roles in television and films.
In his early television career, Swardson appeared in an episode of Lateline in 1999. The following year, he played the role of a David Bowie fan in the film Almost Famous. Swardson’s stand-up was featured in Comedy Central Presents’s half-hour special 2001.
In 2003, Swardson starred as Terry Bernadino on Comedy Central’s series Reno 911! until 2009. He became the co-writer of the screenplay for Malibu’s Most Wanted with Jamie Kennedy and Adam Small. He wrote, produced, and starred in Comedy Central’s Gay Robot pilot. He co-wrote the comedy film Grandma’s Boy with Allen Covert and Barry Wernick, released in 2006.
In 2010, Swardson started to perform in the Sketch comedy show Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time on Comedy Central, which ran for two seasons. The following year, he played Bucky Larson in Tom Brady’s comedy film Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Starm, where he also served as the writer and producer. In 2014, he became Troy’s voice cast in the animated sitcom Chozen on FX. He also voiced in the films Bolt (2008), Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015), Hell and Back (2015), and Leo (2023).
